Religious Tourism

The Casentino IS a very sought after destination FROM a religious point OF VIEW, thanks TO its Santuari , famous AND appreciated throughout Italy AND the world. Suffice it TO mention the Sanctuary OF La Verna , IN which the stigmata lived AND received one OF the most important figures IN ALL OF Christianity, San Francesco . The Sanctuary, OPEN ALL YEAR round, IS a mystical place WHERE you can admire among other things a museum IN which ARE preserved many ancient manuscripts, sculptures, crucifixes AND paintings dating back TO the fourteenth century, clothes AND precious objects such AS goblets, lamps AND tabernacles OF the highest VALUE. Passing through the corridors OF the Sanctuary, WHERE you can breathe a truly spiritual atmosphere, you can reach the cave WITH the "bed" OF San Francesco AND the precipice WHERE according TO history the devil tried TO bring down the saint who managed TO save himself thanks TO the boulder that deformed TO contain its body TO the rock face. IN the church OF the Sanctuary there IS also the Saint's halo perfectly preserved until today, located inside a glass case.
Other religious destinations of great interest are the Monastery of Camaldoli , in which a community of monks still lives following the dictates of tradition, producing thanks to their ancient recipes renowned products such as candies, liqueurs, chocolates as well as cosmetics and remedies with a natural basis. A little later, proceeding along a small road that goes into the heart of the wood, you can get to the famous Hermitage of Camaldoli , a community of Benedictine monks founded about 1000 years ago by San Romualdo, where today you can breathe an air of truly emotional spirituality.
To complete this small religious journey we can mention other important destinations. For example the splendid Pieve di Romena today declared Monumento Nazionale , located near the village of Pratovecchio, whose appearance has remained essentially unchanged over the centuries. Near the Pieve there is also the homonymous Castle of Romena, famous already in the Dantesque era and the latter mentioned in the Divine Comedy.
Another religious place of great interest is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Sasso , located a few steps from the village of Bibbiena. The story tells that in this place in about 1340, above the big boulder there was the apparition of the Madonna . And it is right above this great rock that the Dominican Fathers, custodians of the Sanctuary, built the Church which is still a place of worship for many pilgrims.
There are also numerous small churches located in the various villages in the area, where you can occasionally find pleasant artistic surprises, such as paintings by the author, frescoes, decorations of various kinds, terracotta Robbiane and much more.
